Aligning climate solutions with human systems

We are Core Matter. We develop climate solutions that unite our energy, food, and other human systems with nature. We are made up of an interdisciplinary team of scientists, designers, psychologists, and engineers who share the belief that all communities can design for a healthier planet.

OUR PROCESS

Using a human-centered design process, we explore new approaches to affect a positive impact. By working collaboratively, we can draw on community knowledge, expert research, and behavioral understanding to propose new ways to improve negative impacts on our environment.

Define the problem

Here we explore where the core problem lies. What are currently the biggest sources of emissions? Who is most impacted?

Research and interview

What are current pain points for users/community members? Within the sector or industry, who are the key players? What’s the history of this issue and the community’s relationship with it? How did we get to where we’re at, and who can help us understand a better way forward?

Ideate

Start to generate ideas on how to address the problem. Where can we offer a different perspective or approach? How are existing strategies not reaching the audience? Where are the gaps in the process or communication?

Prototype

Develop the strongest ideas into working prototypes. Prototypes are quick and dirty—just refined enough to function. Do they address the problem and achieve the outcome we’re looking for? Where can we refine?

Test and iterate

Share prototypes with folks we met with originally—community members, experts, and other stakeholders. What works and what doesn’t? Gather feedback, and go back and refine as much as needed.

CURRENT PROJECT

How to improve composting rates in multifamily housing?

Over 1/3 of food globally is never eaten. And food waste is one of the biggest contributors to climate change and emissions. So, we’re diving into our local Oakland food waste collection system (and our own smelly compost bins). We’re looking to see where the gaps might be, and where we could propose alternate solutions.
